Police have opened an investigation into another death of a prisoner who had been brought to Brooklyn’s Central Booking facility this week.
According to police sources, the 46-year-old unnamed male prisoner underwent a medical episode inside 120 Schermerhorn St. in Downtown Brooklyn just after 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 7.
Sources say that the man had been cuffed at around 1:34 p.m. on Sept. 6 near the Cypress Hills Houses located at 305 Fountain Ave. for possession of a controlled substance. He was known to the department with about 40 prior arrests.
While the NYPD did not provide further information on the incident, sources familiar with the investigation reported that the man began showing signs of drug withdrawal and was rushed to the hospital.
EMS whisked him to Brooklyn Hospital Center, where he died on Sept. 9. His identity is being withheld pending proper family notification. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
This is not the first time a prisoner died while waiting to see a judge in Brooklyn this year.
On April 12, Zamiqua Miller, 33, of Dumont Avenue in Brownsville was found unconscious and unresponsive while being held for booking at 120 Schermerhorn St.
In a similar incident, she has also been arrested for possession of a controlled substance. On April 19, 51-year-old Hector Sierra grew ill while being detained at Central Booking. Staff called for an ambulance but he could not be saved.
