Remembering Terry Moultroup: Vermont pilot who took iconic photo above Manhattan on 9/11
A funeral service will be held on September 13 for Terry Moultroup, an F-16 pilot who was deployed to fly over New York in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks. Moultroup died on August 29 after a long illness.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. —
Friends, family, and members of the Air National Guard are remembering Terry Moultroup, a pilot for the Vermont Air National Guard who was deployed to fly over Manhattan on 9/11.

Moultroup died on August 29 at the age of 64, just two weeks before the 25th anniversary of the attack. According to Moultroup’s obituary, he died peacefully at his Richmond home after a long illness.
During Moultroup’s deployment in the aftermath of 9/11, he took a now-iconic image of an F-16 flying over ground zero. The image, taken after the attack, shows smoke billowing over Manhattan.

Moultroup was born in Vermont. He joined the Vermont Air National Guard in college and become an F-4 pilot, before transitioning to an F-16 unit. Moultroup also served on the selectboard in Huntington for several years.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 13 in Jericho. Moultroup’s family has asked for donations to UVM Home Health & Hospice in lieu of flowers.
