Cam Schlittler continued to stake his claim to the American League’s Cy Young Award on Sunday, holding the Mets scoreless in a 2-0 win that secured a Subway Series victory for the Yankees.

Schlittler only permitted one hit as he blanked the crosstown rivals, and that didn’t come until there were two outs in the fifth frame. He also walked two and struck out eight with the 94 pitches he threw over six innings.

Armed with three different fastballs, Schlittler made particularly good use of his four-seamer on Sunday, as it induced 11 whiffs while averaging 98.2 mph. He also got four whiffs from his seldom-used curveball.

The 25-year-old, nearing the end of his first full season in the majors, now has a 1.95 ERA over 31 starts this year, tying him for the major league lead among starters with Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski. Schlittler has fanned 228 batters and only walked 44 over 184.2 innings. He has allowed no more than one run in 21 of his outings — Blake Snell, Dean Chance and Babe Ruth are the only pitchers 25 or younger with more such starts in one season over the last 110 years — and he is in position to become just the third Yankee to finish a campaign with a sub-.2.00 ERA since the stat became official.

Ron Guidry (1.74 ERA in 1978) and Spud Chandler (1.64 ERA in 1943) are the others.

“He’s really good at what he does,” Aaron Boone said of Schlittler before Sunday’s game. “There’s probably some freedom and fun in walking out between the lines knowing he can dominate big league hitters.”

Schlittler is also in a strong position to take home baseball’s most prestigious pitching award. His rotation mate, Gerrit Cole, is the last Yankee to win a Cy Young. Cole did so in 2023.

Schlittler’s main competition for the hardware is Dylan Cease, who totaled five innings, four hits, one earned run, five walks and nine strikeouts against the Orioles on Sunday.

The Blue Jays’ ace has the advantage with 236 strikeouts, but he trails Schlittler with a 2.38 ERA. Cease is also behind in innings (166.1) and starts (28), and yet he’s issued more free passes (72).

Entering Sunday, Schlittler (5.7) also edged Cease (5.5) in fWAR. The next-closest American League pitcher was Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen (4.6), who has a 2.81 ERA this season.

Should Schlittler win the Cy Young, he would become the seventh Yankee to do so. In addition to Cole and Guidry, Rogers Clemens, Sparky Lyle, Whitey Ford and Bob Turley have all won the award in pinstripes.
