BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Brooklyn FC Women recorded a 3-2 upset win over Sporting JAX in Gainbridge Super League action on Sunday.
Alex Smith celebrated his first win as head coach behind a brace from Catherine Zimmerman as Brooklyn handed JAX its first loss of the season.
Brooklyn (3 points), which is in last place in the eight-team league, improved to 1-4. Second-place JAX (10) dropped to 3-1-1.
Brooklyn scored twice within the opening 10 minutes of the match.
Zimmerman tallied in the fifth minute. Midfielder Emma Loving sent a long ball over the top to Zimmerman, who muscled off a defender and finished with one touch for her first goal of the campaign.
Five minutes later, Zee King doubled Brooklyn’s lead. King made a run behind the defense and midfielder Jennifer Cudjoe slid the ball through to find King for another first-time finish.
Sporting JAX cut the lead in half in the 17th minute, as forward Baylee DeSmit volleyed a ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal this season.
In the 37th minute, Brooklyn thought a penalty kick should have been awarded after Loving was pushed from behind. The referee did not call it.
The hosts had a great opportunity in the 66th minute. Midfielder Jilly Shimkin’s shot from the edge of the 18-yard box was deflected and barely flew over the net.
Zimmerman scored her second in the 82nd minute. Ashlyn Miller, who entered the match just minutes before, crossed the ball from the right wing to find Zimmerman at the back post.
JAX clawed back another goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
