ST. GEORGE, Staten Island (PIX11) — A student was caught with a loaded gun at a Staten Island high school on Monday, according to police.
At around 10:20 a.m. at Curtis High School, officers found a loaded gun inside the backpack of a student, according to the NYPD. The 18-year-old was taken into custody.

Sources tell PIX11 that the 18-year-old was fighting another student when school safety agents broke up the fight. That is when the agents found the firearm in the backpack. Curtis High School does not have metal detectors.
The Department of Education released a statement stating:
“Weapons have no place in our schools or our city. The incident was quickly and safely addressed by our School Safety Agents, and no students or staff were injured. The gun was safely recovered after a search was conducted of the student’s bookbag. NYPD was called immediately upon discovery of the firearm.”
