Four Meriden residents were arrested on Sunday in connection with a street takeover on Long Island on Sunday.
A 28-year-old was charged with reckless driving, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, and unlawful speed contests, sideshows, and races. A 33-year-old, 30-year old, and 35-year-old were charged with unlawful speed contests, sideshows, and races.
Officers with the Suffolk County, New York, Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force responded to Express Drive North in Yaphank, New York, around 1:10 a.m. Sunday after a 911 caller reported a large gathering of vehicles.
When police arrived, they saw two vehicles racing before the vehicles dispersed, according to police.
Officers later stopped a truck that was towing a trailer carrying a race car and arrested four people, all from Meriden. The truck, trailer, and race car were also impounded, police said.
“We welcome visitors to Suffolk County. But if your plans include illegal street racing, you may want to reconsider the trip,” Suffolk County police wrote in a Facebook post. “Our Street Takeover Task Force will continue targeting this dangerous activity — no matter where those involved call home.”
The people charged will be arraigned at a later date, police said.
