New York state withdraws plan for 3,000-bed prison

New York state has withdrawn a plan to study the construction of a 3,000-bed prison, according to the Albany Times Union.

The state had posted a request to explore the possibility of building the facility, but the proposal was removed from its website over the weekend.

The plan drew sharp criticism from Sen. Dan Stec and Assemblyman Michael Cashman, who said New York needs to first address staffing and safety problems in existing prisons.

The state had not identified a location for the proposed facility.
