CAIRO, N.Y. (WRGB) — A man was shot and killed by a New York State Police trooper at a campground in Greene County Monday night.

The incident happened at Whip-O-Will Campground, located off Route 31, about eight miles from Cairo.

State police told CBS6 that the man who died was identified as Amir Hamza, 45. They later confirmed he was armed with a BB gun.

According to state police, troopers were called to the campground for reports of an assault between two men. Troopers located one man with a head injury, who directed them to a nearby camper where the other man was located.

Colleen Christiana, who lives across the street from the campground, said she heard yelling and screaming around 8 or 8:30 p.m.

“I didn’t think nothing of it. Then about 15, 20 minutes later, I hear the car. Cop cars and my dog’s barking like she’s nuts. And it stopped,” said Christiana.

Christiana said she later thought she heard a gunshot.

“I wasn’t really sure, you know, because my dog was barking, so I wasn’t really sure. And that was about it,” said Christiana.

State police said troopers located the second man inside a camper. According to investigators, the man came outside carrying what appeared to be a handgun and approached troopers. One of the troopers then fired their weapon.

Hamza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Christiana, who said she has lived near the campground for about a year, described the area as normally quiet.

“Nothing happens here,” Christiana said when asked whether anything similar had happened since she moved there. “It’s just, you know, normal. But this ain’t normal.”

In a statement posted on Facebook, Whip-O-Will Campground said the “Whip-O-Will family is saddened by the tragic events involving a transient camper…”

The campground said it was grateful all seasonal staff members were safe and thanked law enforcement for its quick response.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations are investigating the case.

CBS6 has reached out to New York State Police to determine whether the trooper involved has been placed on leave and whether any related policies have been implemented.
