CAIRO, N.Y. (WNYT) – New York State Police said a man was shot and killed by a trooper after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a handgun during an assault response in Cairo.
Troopers responded at about 8:22 p.m. Sept. 14 to Whip O Will Campground at 644 Route 31 in the Town of Cairo for a report of an assault involving two males. Police said they found the assault victim with a head injury, and the victim directed troopers to a nearby camper.
Police said a male subject then came out of the camper holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. According to New York State Police, the subject pointed the apparent handgun at a trooper and kept moving toward him before the trooper fired his duty weapon and struck the subject.
Troopers then gave medical aid and called for emergency medical services. EMS personnel pronounced the subject dead at the scene.
The identities of the people involved are being withheld pending next of kin notifications and will be released in a later update.
The New York Attorney General’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Catskill are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police at 845-344-5300.
Whip-O-Will Campsites posted a statement on Facebook. It reads;
“The Whip-O-Will family is saddened by the tragic events involving a transient camper on September 14th. We are grateful that all of our seasonal Whip-O-Will family is safe and thank law enforcement for their quick response. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that lost a loved one.”
