The New York Giants lost their 11th straight road game on Sunday, which is a new franchise record. Their 24-20 collapse at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears was also their fourth loss this season, where they blew a 10-point lead.

Head coach Brian Daboll has been out of answers for a while now. These days, when he steps up to the podium, he has nothing new to say, no solutions to speak of, and very little hope to offer. He is a dead man walking.

“I mean, there were a number of things today,” Daboll said when asked why his team can’t close out games. “There were all three phases, just didn’t get the job done.”

Thank you for clearing that up for us.

But the issues go deeper than that. After leading the Giants to the postseason in his first year on the job, 2022, Daboll’s record over the next two-and-a-half seasons is a sad 11-33. They lose by margins large and small and in ways that only teams who are poorly prepared do.

Every week, there are more and more questions about his tactics and strategy. Daboll’s in-game and pregame management decisions have backfired all too often. He has gone from being the smartest guy in the room to one who will be escorted from that room.

Before the season, Giants co-owner John Mara gave Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen a reprieve for another season. If he had relieved both of them of their duties right then and there, few would have protested. Now, after 10 games that produced only two wins this season, the writing is on the wall. Schoen might get to stay, but Daboll’s days are done here.

The coach had one last card to play, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, and that hasn’t moved the needle enough. Dart has enthralled the fans and has displayed traits that he could become their franchise quarterback for years to come. That is, if he can keep himself out of danger.

Dart plays with reckless abandon, taking on too many unnecessary hits, and was taken out of Sunday’s game with a concussion he incurred while running the football — another designed run.
