Back-to-school season has officially started, and even royals are getting in on the act. Queen Letizia of Spain marked the start of a new school year in sweet, personal style, heading to her own childhood school of Gesta State Nursery and Primary School, also know as La Gesta, in Oviedo. There, the queen dropped in on several classes, meeting a whole new generation of La Gesta students.

And as many of the students had probably chosen special first day of school outfits, Letizia followed suit, donning a crisp, classic white button down, with feminine ruffled cuffs, and pairing it with a pair of high-waisted navy trousers with military-inspired brass button details at the hips. The queen paired the look with her usual undone waves, and understated hoop earrings.

Before she was a member of the royal family, Letizia grew up in Oviedo, in the principality of Asturias. She and her two younger sisters all attended La Gesta, where the future queen was remembered for being a “bright and respectful student, though not a bookworm,” some of her former teachers said when Letizia and her husband, King Felipe, paid a visit to the school in honor of its 50th anniversary in 2008.

At that time, Letizia and Felipes were titled the Prince and Princess of Asturias—the traditional title for the second in line to the Spanish throne, and one that their daughter Leonor now bears. Felipe acceded the throne in 2014, after his father, the former King Juan Carlos, chose to abdicate. The former ruler later went into self-imposed exile in Abu Dhabi, amidst a scandal over potential financial misconduct, though he has occasionally returned to Spain in the subsequent year, including on Easter 2026.
