NY State Police trooper named in Cairo campground deadly shooting

New York State Police have released the name of the trooper involved in a deadly shooting at a Cairo campground.

CAIRO, N.Y. (WNYT)- New York State Police (NYSP) have identified the trooper involved in Monday’s deadly shooting at a campground in Cairo.

State police said the trooper is Ronal Diaz-Arriaza. They said Diaz-Arriaza has been with NYSP since 2023.

The shooting happened Monday, September 14 at the Whip-O-Will campground. Police said Amir Hamza, 45, was killed after he pointed what police said looked like a black pistol-style gun directly at Trooper Diaz-Arriaza.

Police said the gun turned out to be a BB gun.
