NEW YORK (TNND) — Two 24-year-old New Jersey friends were hit and killed by a subway train in Manhattan, with video showing them sitting on the tracks moments before the train arrived, according to reports.
Citing the New York Police Department, PEOPLE reported that Malaika Chitre, of Dayton, and Navam Kaul, of Sayreville, were hit by a southbound train at the Spring Street station on Sunday around 3:15 a.m.
Responding officers found the pair on the tracks and they were pronounced dead at the scene, the media outlet noted.
Video reviewed by investigators and witnesses appeared to show two people sitting on the tracks before the train arrived, according to the New New York Daily News. The train operator tried to stop, but could not avoid hitting them.
Investigators have not said why the friends were on the tracks, but the Daily News reported that one of them appeared to have fallen on the tracks, with the other jumping down to help.
About 100 passengers were evacuated from the train following the crash, per the Daily News.
Chitre and Kaul were reportedly Rutgers University graduates. Chitre worked for Acadia Pharmaceuticals, while Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg, according to PEOPLE.
An investigation in their deaths remains ongoing, per reports.
