NEW YORK (WABC) — The New York Yankees will place outfielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a right calf strain, the team announced on Friday.
The development comes after Judge was pulled for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins because of what the team described as tightness in his lower right leg.
Judge struck out in both of his at-bats Wednesday against Twins starter Zebby Matthews before being lifted for Heliot Ramos.
Judge was 4 for 26 with 13 strikeouts and one extra-base hit in seven games since returning last week from a broken rib.
Judge said he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what happened to trigger the latest injury, which he declined to specify.
“I tried to kind of play it off and see how it would go because these games are important down the stretch, but after kind of talking it over I thought it would be the right move to come out so we don’t cost the team on the field or cost the team on the basepaths,” Judge said.
The Yankees said a corresponding move would be made once Judge is officially placed on the IL.
With just 10 games left for the Yankees before the end of the regular season, it remains to be seen if Judge would be ready to return in time for the playoffs.
The Wild Card Series begins on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
