MASPETH, Queens (WABC) — There is a new call to action in Queens after an attempted street takeover on Friday night.

Police say officers broke up a crowd of motorcycle riders causing chaos near 69th Street and Eliot Avenue in Maspeth.

People who live near the intersection say they are sick of street takeovers and say it has no place in their neighborhood.

Councilman Phil Wong represents District 30 in Queens and tells Eyewitness News there were roughly 30 dirt bikes, motorcycles and other vehicles doing donuts and acrobatic moves in the streets.

Wong says they block buses and public transit, creating all sorts of safety issues. He also says police were on it quickly – problem is, the groups move to another spot and the takeover continues.

“You can’t have this. We cannot tolerate this. These meetups are dangerous for the drivers themselves and to other residents in the neighborhood, it wakes up everybody, don’t do it,” said Wong.

Wong says he is working on a bill to get NYPD a dedicated street takeover unit. He says it is a citywide problem, not just in Queens.

Wong plans to work to push the bill through the public safety committee as soon as possible.
