MONTREAL — Liam Miletich and Zack Page each scored three goals as the McGill Redbirds broke open a tie game with four unanswered markers in the fourth quarter to defeat the Queen’s Gaels 9-5 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
The victory kept McGill undefeated at 3-0 under new head coach Andrew Meakes following season-opening wins over Trent and Carleton.
McGill led 1-0 on Miletich’s opening-quarter goal before Cam Milligan replied for Queen’s to send the teams into the second stanza tied at 1-1.
The Redbirds took control in the second quarter, when Miletich scored twice to complete his hat-trick and Page added another. Milligan’s second of the afternoon accounted for the lone Queen’s response as McGill carried a 4-2 advantage into halftime.
Callum Olson extended the lead to 5-2 in the third quarter before Tanner Harrison answered for the Gaels, setting the stage for a fourth-quarter rally by the visitors.
Harrison struck again early in the final stanza and Ryan Gonsalvez followed to pull Queen’s even at 5-5 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
McGill responded with four straight goals. Torsten Blodgett netted what proved to be the game-winner at 8:03, before Page scored twice to complete his hat-trick. Jack Faller rounded out the scoring with three seconds remaining.
Page finished with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Miletich had three goals. Blodgett contributed a goal and an assist, with Olson and Faller supplying the other McGill markers.
Milligan and Harrison scored twice apiece for Queen’s, while Gonsalvez had the other Gaels goal.
McGill held a 29-15 advantage in shots, including a 17-6 margin over the middle two quarters.
