EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A sloppy game Sunday turned into a back-and-forth fourth quarter that eventually went to overtime, and the Packers drove 58 yards for the game-winning field goal to beat the Jets, 20-17, at MetLife Stadium.
The Packers trailed 17-7 in the fourth quarter and rallied on the strength of a TD pass to WR Christian Watson and then a game-tying field goal. Green Bay’s defense gave the offense a chance at midfield at the end of regulation with a fourth-and-1 stop, but the Packers couldn’t capitalize and the game went to overtime.
In the OT, Green Bay’s defense sacked Jets QB Geno Smith twice during a three-and-out. Once the Packers took over, they swiftly moved into scoring range thanks to an 11-yard run by RB Kaleb Johnson, a 15-yard swing pass to RB Chris Brooks (that had 15 yards tacked on for a late hit) and a 14-yard completion to WR Matthew Golden to get inside the 10-yard line.
The Packers sent out rookie K Trey Smack at that point, and he made the 26-yard walk-off kick with 5:23 left in OT.
Plagued by injuries, penalties and sloppy play for much of three quarters, the Packers turned things around to even their season at 1-1. The Jets are also 1-1.
QB Jordan Love finished 16-of-29 for 145 yards with two TDs and a 91.9 passer rating. Johnson had eight carries for 32 yards. Golden had four catches for 58 yards, while Watson had four catches for 41 yards and a score.
The Packers lost WR Jayden Reed (neck), T Zach Bako-Bewele (knee), G Aaron Banks (toe) and G Donovan Jennings (hand) to injuries during the game.
For the Jets, Smith was 27-of-41 for 247 yards with one TD and a 90.2 passer rating. RB Breece Hall was held to just 29 yards on 16 carries, while WR Adonai Mitchell had six catches for 63 yards, Hall added five catches for 63 yards, and WR Garrett Wilson had five catches for 57 yards and a score.
The two teams combined for 27 penalties for 289 yards.
