New York State Police comprises 12 Troops throughout the Empire State. Troop C is based in Sidney and serves the counties of Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Delaware, Cortland, Tompkins, and Otsego.
Here are a few highlights of activity from the week of September 14, 2026, from Troop C news releases.
Two Vehicle Crash In A Work Zone
September 14th around 2:14 p.m., New York State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash in a work zone on Interstate 81 north in the town of Chenango.
ACcording ot the report, an 81-year-old female from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was traveling northbound on Interstate 81 in a Toyota RAV4 when she struck an attenuator in a work zone near mile marker 18.
The operator of the truck was a 30-year-old male from Cincinnatus. Neither driver reported any injuries. As a result of this crash, troopers are once again reminding motorists to use extra caution when traveling through work zones.
Slow down, remain alert, follow posted speed limits and work-zone signs, and be prepared for sudden traffic pattern changes.
Underage Drinking Initiative in Broome County
New York State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Initiative in Broome County on September 12th, as they focused on retail establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
12 businesses in the county were checked for compliance with New York State Alcoholic Beverage Control laws.
Out of the 12 establishments visited, only one business was found not in compliance. An employee at a convenience store in the town of Vestal sold an alcoholic beverage to an operative under the age of 21 and was issued an appearance ticket for Procuring Alcoholic Beverages for Person Under the Age of 21 Years, a violation under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law.
According to the New York State Police, during these underage drinking initiatives, investigators utilize plainclothes members and underage operatives who are prohibited from lying about their age or presenting false identification if asked. Businesses that request identification and refuse the sale when appropriate are considered compliant.
Counterfeit Currency Arrest
Following an investigation into counterfeit currency and a subsequent traffic stop on September 14th, New York State Police in Oneonta arrested 29-year-old Kashawn Miller from Troy, New York.
On that date, a Trooper was dispatched to a Dunkin’ Donuts in the town of Oneonta after an individual attempted to pay for a drive-thru order with a counterfeit $50 bill. The trooper noted that the person drove off without any items after an employee questioned the authenticity of the bill.
Several hours later, two NYS troopers on Main Street in Schenevus observed a Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding in a school zone. The vehicle and operator matched the description obtained during the early investigation from Dunkin’ Donuts in Oneonta.
Troopers initiated a traffic stop and identified the motorist as Kashawn Miller, who showed signs of impairment. Miller was taken into custody. Troopers also located two additional counterfeit $50 bills and scales with suspected drug residue.
Miller was charged with: three counts of Possession of Forged Instrument in the 1st degree, a class “C” felony, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs, and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia.
He was processed and transported to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.
Two-Car Crash in Caroline
On September 17, 2026, at approximately 6:50 a.m., New York State Police at Ithaca responded to Slaterville Road in the town of Caroline on September 17th for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.
According to the report from the New York State Police, a Chevrolet HHR, operated by 42-year-old Jeffrey Belden from Richford, was traveling eastbound on Slaterville Road when it collided head-on with a westbound Chevrolet Equinox, operated by 32-year-old Donovan Flanigan of Newark Valley.
Belden had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the fire department, was transported by ambulance to Cayuga Medical Center, and then transported by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester to be treated for serious injuries.
Flanigan was transported by ambulance to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
Tanker Truck Fire On Interstate 81
Around 6:21 a.m. on September 18th, New York State Police at Marathon responded to a report of a tanker truck on fire on Interstate 81 in the town of Marathon.
It was determined that the operator of the tanker truck was traveling southbound on Interstate 81 when the vehicle caught fire. Fortunately, the operator of the tanker truck was able to safely maneuver the tanker into a U-turn.
The Marathon Fire Department arrived to extinguish the tanker truck fire. The truck was transporting oil. No injuries were reported.
