Gov. Hochul expands AI safety laws in New York
ALBANY, N.Y. —
New York’s governor is rolling out new updates to the state’s artificial intelligence safety laws after she created the “Raise Act” last year.
The “Raise Act” stands for Responsible AI and Safety Education and has established regulations on AI.
Starting in November, large AI companies will be required to register with the state. Beginning in January, they will be required to make all safety protocols and incident reports completely transparent.
“Because here in New York, our people always come before the race for the most powerful technology. And because no matter where you look, smart, sensible regulation is fundamental to a safe and functioning society,” said Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Hochul has created a new office called the Office of Digital Innovation, Governance, and Trust, also known as “Digit.” This office will be working to hold AI companies accountable for these new requirements.
Hochul has also directed this office to consider the use of AI “kill switches” which could suspend certain companies if they don’t comply.
Hochul also called on other government officials to take action on the regulation of AI.
