On September 21, 2026, at approximately 1:04 p.m. New York State Police responded to a one-vehicle fatal crash on the northern part of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway in the area of the toll booths town of Smithtown, Suffolk County NY.
The preliminary investigation determined that a vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park and became engulfed in flames. One deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle.
Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene. The New York State Park Police, Kings Park Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department also assisted.
The investigation remains ongoing.
