Binghamton University is continuing its more than 20-year run among U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 public universities in the nation, climbing again in the latest rankings.
The newly released 2027 Best National Colleges list by U.S. News places Binghamton University as its #32 best public university in the nation – up two spots from the previous year. Among both private and public universities, Binghamton is firmly within the top 100 nationally, at #73.
Binghamton was also named the #35 best value school in the United States, placing it at the top among SUNY institutions. Additionally, Binghamton is receiving due praise for being an elite value for students, landing as the #32 university in best value for in-state students, a distinction new to U.S. News’ rankings this year.
“The U.S. News rankings have long been a standard benchmark of measuring the quality of American universities and I’m proud to see Binghamton recognized for its excellence on a national stage,” said President Anne D’Alleva. “Prospective students and their families rely on this list in shaping their decisions and it offers confirmation that Binghamton ranks among the best universities in America. Binghamton offers an elite education and tremendous experiences that forever alter the lives of its graduates.”
In addition to overall university rankings, U.S. News publishes annual lists ranking numerous academic programs at higher education institutions. Three Binghamton programs included in the rankings saw jumps of more than 20 spots in the 2027 ranking – psychology (up 22 spots to #63), nursing (up 23 spots to #75), and economics (up 24 spots to #97).

Binghamton also ranked among the nation’s top 50 universities for veterans, placing #43 in that category.
“In addition to statistical data, presidents and provosts from across the country provide opinions that shape the final rankings,” said Provost Donald Hall. “Binghamton clearly holds a stellar reputation from our peers and colleagues in higher education, a factor that distinguishes the U.S. News list from other rankings. U.S. News evaluates universities in the United States on a series of metrics including graduation rates, assessments by academic peers, graduates’ earnings by major, student-faculty ratio, faculty resources, per-student spending, and faculty research.
Binghamton University’s reputation as an elite public institution was also recently highlighted by Forbes – which named it the top public university in New York state and the #19 public university in the nation.
