Buffalo Common Council members are moving forward with a proposed two-year moratorium on new data centers and cryptocurrency facilities.
Councilmember Joseph Golombek says the goal is to give the city time to update its zoning rules before more facilities are developed.
He also says Buffalo needs to make sure future projects don’t put additional strain on neighborhood infrastructure, including water and sewer systems.
“I would also like to see a way that we do some sort of an agreement with the data centers,” said Golombek. “When they come in, they’re going to be making an awful lot of money. And I would like to see them assist the communities that they go into with infrastructure, because they’re going to put a burden on the infrastructure, whether it’s water, whether it’s sewer.”
A full Buffalo Common Council vote on the moratorium is now set for next Tuesday.
