The New York Mets have made a surprising decision at the end of a disappointing season, removing Andy Green’s interim tag and committing to him as their manager.
Green has agreed to a three-year contract, giving him a chance to lead New York beyond its turbulent 2026 MLB campaign and shape the club’s direction heading into next season.

The decision comes after Green replaced Carlos Mendoza in June and took charge of a team that had fallen out of contention after entering the season with major expectations.
And one of the team’s star players, Francisco Lindor, believes Green has already established an important connection with the clubhouse since taking over, particularly through his emphasis on accountability and leadership.
“I have a lot of respect for Andy,” Lindor told SNY. “I think he’s been good at the role that he’s got right now. Not necessarily the role of managing, because I didn’t see his role this year as to manage.
“His role, right now, was to come in and bring light, bring ownership, bring respect, and bring accountability. He’s succeeded at it.”
Green’s appointment comes with the Mets set to miss the postseason for a second straight year, despite carrying one of baseball’s highest-profile rosters and significant financial investment.
The club reached the National League Championship Series just two seasons ago, but its ongoing campaign deteriorated badly and forced the organization to reconsider its leadership.
Green now inherits a roster that still features major talent, including Juan Soto, while the front office prepares for an offseason centered on restoring consistency and competitiveness.
The 49-year-old manager previously held the job with the San DiegoPadres from 2016 through 2019, finishing that tenure with a 274-366 record before his dismissal.
After leaving San Diego, Green joined the Chicago Cubs as bench coach under David Ross before eventually returning to the Mets organization as a senior vice president for player development before becoming the manager.

Mets receive boost ahead of Texas Rangers clash
New York will open a three-game road series against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, September 22 before finishing the regular season with three games against the Washington Nationals.
The Mets also received a bullpen boost when the team confirmed pitcher Devin Williams was activated from the 15-day injured list after missing roughly six weeks with a right shoulder injury.
Williams has posted a 4.66 ERA with 16 saves in 19 appearances during his first season with the organization following his sizable three-year, $51 million contract signed in December 2025.
The Mets signed Williams after his season with the New York Yankees, hoping the two-time All-Star and two-time National League Reliever of the Year could anchor a revamped bullpen.
His return gives Green another experienced arm to manage during the final week, although Christian Scott was placed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
Green will now enter the offseason with the certainty of a three-year contract and a much larger task: turning a talented Mets roster into a team capable of returning to October baseball.
