A 24-year-old man was shot and killed in broad daylight Tuesday in McLaughlin Park in Downtown Brooklyn, police said.
Police received a 911 call just after 2 p.m. reporting a man shot in the torso, officials said. EMS took him to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Later that afternoon, police cordoned off the ball field at the park’s northeast corner near Flatbush Avenue and Cathedral Place.
The rest of the park was busy. Mothers pushed children on the swings, students from nearby New York City College of Technology talked after class, and dozens of people hung out or played basketball.
The man’s name has not been released pending family notification.
Police have not said what led to the shooting, whether they are searching for a suspect or whether anyone has been taken into custody.
NYPD officials said a shelter-in-place advisory was sent to three nearby schools after the shooting: Westinghouse High School, the Adams Street Educational Campus, and Science Skills Center High School for Science.
Several young people in the park said a shooting there did not surprise them.
One of them, Christina Josiah, 21, said there are frequent fights in the park.
“It’s not even about this area. It’s about the things around the area,” she said.
The investigation is ongoing.
