ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Mobile sports betting across New York State has prompted a surge in both revenue and problem gambling calls.
A new report by the Office of the New York State Comptroller found that mobile sports betting generated $1.3 billion in state revenue for the 2026 fiscal year. At the same time, increased betting led to an 8.5% increase in calls to the state’s problem gambling hotline.

The majority of mobile sports betting is done through apps like FanDuel and DraftKings, which is why the state says accessibility plays a large role in its prevalence.
“The data show this is really popular among young people, [the] generation that has grown tethered to their smartphones,” Deputy Comptroller for Budget and Policy Analysis Maria Doulis said. “That phenomenon makes it very easy and attractive.”
The NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports noted that the majority of users and individuals seeking help are between 18 and 35 years old.

New York estimates that there are roughly seven million accounts, with the average user betting $3,500 annually. The average bet, the comptroller’s office noted, is $42.
The Office of Addiction Services and Supports said it’s exploring more ways to help New Yorkers struggling with addiction.
“We are looking to expand service use and provide expanded opportunity across the board,” Rebecca Cooper with the office said.
