As usual, the host appeared on the show this Tuesday, but this episode of The View felt different because Sunny Hostin revealed that she was the holdout juror who pushed for an insanity verdict in Daniel Rakowitz’s infamous 1991 cannibal case.
During the show, the 57-year-old admitted that she agreed with the 11 jurors who did not want to hold Lindsay Clancy criminally responsible for the killings. The host believed that Daniel Rakowitz, who had admitted to being a cannibal, was similarly not responsible.
For context, Daniel Rakowitz’s 1989 case was horrific and deeply disturbing. According to TMZ’s coverage, Rakowitz’s killing of his roommate, Monica Beerle, ranks among the most brutal and terrifying crimes in New York City’s history. The case earned Rakowitz the infamous nickname, Butcher of Tompkins Square Park.
According to sources, Sunny Hostin told her co-host, “I could clearly see that he was psychotic.”
That was not all. The lawyer also showed on screen the statement she gave to The New York Times after Rakowitz was found not guilty by reason of insanity. It was, “We don’t think he intended to kill her. But once he did, he dismembered her body in an effort to commit the perfect crime.”
The View host revealed that when she told her fellow jurors that she believed the person was not guilty by reason of insanity, they initially became extremely angry with her. One juror even threw a chair at her.
However, Sunny later helped reach a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict in February 1991, and Rakowitz is currently receiving treatment at New York’s Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center.
