Three more people were spotted emerging from the New York City sewer system on the Upper East Side early Wednesday morning, deepening an already bizarre Big Apple mystery.
According to police sources, the NYPD received a 911 call from a witness who believed they had spotted a crime in progress after three unidentified men were seen climbing out of a manhole near 535 Park Ave. The trio then got into two separate vehicles.
One car was described as a silver sedan driven by a man wearing a black hoodie. The second was a four-door vehicle operated by a man wearing a black shirt and gray shorts.
The latest sighting comes as the United Nations General Assembly gets underway in Midtown, not far from areas where world leaders and other dignitaries are staying for the annual gathering, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Given the proximity to the event, local and federal law enforcement agencies have been investigating the area to ensure there are no threats, sources said.
The Department of Environmental Protection also confirmed it was aware of the incident.
“DEP is aware of individuals illegally entering the sewer system at this location. DEP has inspected the sewer and our infrastructure is safe. If observed, residents should immediately call 911 and provide a description so law enforcement can quickly respond. DEP supports the NYPD in investigating these types of incidents to help ensure the safety and security of our critical infrastructure throughout New York City,” the agency said in a statement.
This isn’t the first time New York’s so-called “mole people” have been spotted emerging from the bowels of the city.
Since May 28, a series of videos showing individuals climbing out of manholes on three separate occasions has set the internet ablaze with conspiracy theories. Some have feared the individuals could be terrorists, while others have speculated they might be hunting for alligators.
But in June, police sources told amNewYork that the underground explorers were likely treasure hunters searching for valuables they could retrieve, clean up and sell for a quick profit.
No arrests have been made in the latest incident.
