SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – The Los Angeles Queens made history Tuesday night after winning the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) championship in the league’s inaugural season.
Los Angeles defeated the top-seeded San Francisco Firebells 2-0 to win the five-game championship series.
Ayami Sato pitched the league’s first-ever complete game shutout and was named MVP of the series.
“Honestly, if I had started this season thinking about winning the finals, MVP or trying to make great plays for myself, I don’t think I would have received this award. Instead, I focused on giving everything I had for my team and doing whatever I could to help us succeed. I believe that is what ultimately led to being named MVP,” Sato said in a statement.
LA managed only two hits in the game, the fewest by a winning team during the season.
The WPBL kicked off the season Aug. 1, and its four teams played every game at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield.
The league said that around 70,000 fans attended games this season. ESPN also streamed every regular season and playoff game live.
More information about the league is available online.
