NEW YORK (WBNG) — Fishers across New York can cast a line without purchasing a freshwater fishing license this Saturday in celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day.
The designated date on Sept. 26 is part of the state’s annual Free Fishing Days program, coordinated by Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Following Saturday’s event, the final free fishing opportunity of the year will occur on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
State officials explained that the waived license requirement is aimed at welcoming newcomers to a freshwater hobby while encouraging families to spend time together outdoors.
The event also relates to the governor’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” campaign, which encourages physical and mental well-being through reducing screen time.
While the license mandate is removed for the day, all standard freshwater fishing rules and catch regulations will stay in full effect. Anglers 16 and older are normally required to hold a valid license to fish in New York waters outside of designated free days.
To support beginners, the DEC provides instructional resources online, including a freshwater guide, instructional videos and a mobile app featuring local fishing and boating access.
Community members can also attend DEC-approved educational fishing clinics or borrow equipment through participating public libraries across the state.
