New York State Police Troop T conducted another major ghost plate and toll enforcement detail Tuesday on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, continuing efforts to crack down on motorists using missing, altered or obscured license plates to avoid tolls and traffic enforcement cameras.
During the operation, troopers issued 287 tickets for a wide range of violations, including suspended and unregistered vehicles, unlicensed drivers, speeding, cell phone use, seatbelt violations and violations of the Move Over Law. One driver was also arrested for DWI.
Police impounded 39 vehicles for unpaid tolls.
Troop T’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit also participated in the detail, conducting 32 commercial vehicle inspections. Ten vehicles were immediately taken out of service due to safety-related violations.
The unit issued an additional 96 violations for equipment, permit, registration and other commercial vehicle infractions.
State Police say the enforcement efforts on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge are part of an ongoing crackdown on vehicles using so-called “ghost plates” and other methods to evade tolls and automated traffic enforcement.
