Actors Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon spent part of Thursday in handcuffs outside the United Nations, where they joined a New York City protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the General Assembly, the Los Angeles Times reports. Jewish Voice for Peace, which helped organize the action, said more than 100 people were arrested as demonstrators blocked access near the UN while chanting “Free Palestine” and accusing Netanyahu of genocide. Police pointed to the “unscheduled” event blocking an intersection, the Guardian reports.
Other celebrities were spotted in the crowd, though they were not reported arrested; Deadline lists Cynthia Nixon, Elliot Page, Chelsea Manning, Glennon Doyle, Sarah Sherman, Mary Beth Barone, Indya Moore, and Caleb Hearon as attendees. Inside the hall, Netanyahu’s address drew both cheers and walkouts. He rejected genocide allegations as “the biggest lie of the century,” defended Israel’s military campaign and criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has publicly labeled him a “war criminal.”
