A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in the back at an apartment complex in Queens on Monday afternoon, the police said.
Officers responded to a 911 call just after 3:30 p.m. about the shooting on Beach Channel Drive near Beach 51st Street in the Edgemere neighborhood, the police said.
The boy, whom the police identified as Malakai Adams, was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where he died.
It was unclear on Monday night what prompted the shooting. Investigators were searching for a person wearing a black sweatshirt and white shorts who fled the scene on a scooter, the police said. So far, no arrests have been made.
There were five shootings between Jan. 1 and Sept. 20 in the 101st Police Precinct, where the shooting on Monday occurred — twice the number during the same time period last year, according to the most recently available police data.
