SEA BRIGHT, New Jersey (WABC) — Cleanup and repairs are underway across parts of New Jersey after a powerful nor’easter brought flooding, beach erosion, power outages and dozens of water rescues over the weekend.
In Sea Bright, officials said 67 people were rescued, including 45 from homes, as floodwaters inundated coastal communities. Flooding continued Monday morning in some areas, with emergency crews still assisting stranded residents.
Video from Deal showed rescue crews wading through knee-deep floodwaters as they responded to emergencies. Coastal flooding was also blamed for significant beach erosion.
In Atlantic City, waves washed away portions of the beach as rough surf battered the shoreline. Meanwhile, utility crews responded to downed trees and power lines in North Jersey, where strong winds knocked out electricity for thousands of customers. Schools on Long Beach Island are closed on Monday.
Sea Bright Mayor Brian Kelly said first responders were especially busy responding to residents trapped by flooding over the weekend.
“People were just stuck in flooded houses and they couldn’t get out, so they assisted quite a bit,” he said.
Power outages had declined significantly by Monday morning, with about 2,400 outages still reported, as utility crews continued restoration efforts across the state.
Coastal communities will have to weather one more high tide cycle this morning. High tide in Sea Bright is 10:30 a.m.
New Jersey state offices will open at 11 a.m. Eight counties remain under a state of emergency
