New York man charged with assault after infant arrives at hospital with arm fracture, broken ribs

Michael CusanelliMADRID, N.Y. —

A Northern New York man is facing charges after an infant was treated for serious injuries last week.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said Shane Shortt of Madrid, NY, has been charged with 2nd-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child after a three-week-old child was brought to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital on Sept. 20 with eye injuries and a fractured arm.

The child had to be transferred to the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, where staff found that the child also had 10 broken ribs.

Shortt was arraigned on the charges, and the judge ordered him to be released on probation. Shortt is not allowed to have any contact with the child.
