Bay Ridge families took over more than 10 blocks of Fifth Avenue on Sept. 19, swapping traffic for magic, crafts, games and plenty of kid-friendly fun.
Brooklyn Bridge Parents and the 5th Avenue BID hosted the second annual FAMCHELLA, a free family-friendly street fair inspired by the energy and flair of Coachella. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the car-free stretch of Fifth Avenue between 68th and 81st streets transformed into a neighborhood festival packed with activities for children.
Kids could try their hand at arts and crafts, games and LEGO play, while other attractions included balloon twisting, glitter tattoos and more.
The afternoon also featured a magic show from 4 to 4:30 p.m. on Fifth Avenue between 76th and 77th streets.

For Elizabeth Lovejoy, executive director of the 5th Avenue BID, the event was about more than simply giving families something to do on a Saturday afternoon.
“FAMCHELLA is all about bringing our community together, and we were proud to partner with Brooklyn Bridge Parents to create family-friendly activations that gave kids plenty of opportunities to play, explore, and have fun.

She also spoke of the BID’s partnership with the Bay Ridge Community Development Center (BRCDC), provide families with essential school supplies and jackets during the event.
“These partnerships are what make events like FAMCHELLA truly special; they allow us to not only celebrate our neighborhood but also support the families and children who make our community so vibrant,” Lovejoy added.
Following FAMCHELLA, the BID will host a Coffee Crawl on Oct. 3 and the annual Halloween Fest on Oct. 24.
