RICHLAND, N.Y. — The New York State Police have identified the two Amish children who were killed when a vehicle crashed into their buggies on Sept. 25.
The state police identified the deceased as 13-year-old Anna J. Hershberger and 7-year-old Moses J. Hershberger.
A 9-year-old girl who was critically injured in the crash was taken to Upstate University Hospital. The police said that as of Monday, her condition has been upgraded to stable. However, she remains hospitalized.
Troopers responded to the crash around 9:16 a.m. on Sept. 25. The report said a van crashed into two Amish buggies at the intersection of County Route 41 and Manwaring Road in the Town of Richland.
A preliminary investigation found that a 47-year-old from Sandy Creek, N.Y., was traveling south on County Route 41 when their van struck the two buggies traveling south in the same direction. One buggy had four people in it and the other had five.
The first buggy had four boys and the 9-year-old girl in it. The boys were taken to the hospital for evaluation and listed in stable condition.
The Hershbergers and two other children were in the second buggy: a 10-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl. The police noted that the boy had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The 8-year-old girl was not hurt.
No tickets or charges have been announced against the driver of the van. The police also did not reveal what led up to the crash, either.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
