MANHATTAN (WABC) — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday for the new Manhattan Immigrant Welcome Center.

The building on 125th Street will connect migrants with vital services like free legal assistance, social services, and tools to secure healthcare benefits.

The Manhattan borough president says the center is needed because the Trump administration has declared war on immigrant communities, including flooding neighborhoods with ICE agents and arresting immigrants at court hearings.

“He’s suing to dismantle New York City’s sanctuary protections. But we know New York City values our immigrant community,” said Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Manhattan Borough President. “What makes our community rich in diversity is our immigrant community.”

Hoylman-Sigal points out that immigrants make up about 38% of New York City’s population and account for 43% of the workforce.
