Queen Mary arrived in a cream and metallic ruffled dress by Australian designer Toni Maticevski, paired with leaf-shaped gold and diamond earrings by Danish jeweler Ole Lynggaard, a Cartier Love bracelet, and a thicker gold bracelet that dates back to 1868. The bangle, which was one of Queen Lovisa’s wedding bracelets, belongs to the Danish Royal Property Trust, the jewel collection established by Lovisa in 1910 for the use of sitting Danish queens. Many pieces have been worn by Queen Margrethe, who abdicated in January 2024, and by Queen Mary since her husband’s accession.
This particular bracelet features eight square gold sections, each set with a large pearl surrounded by 16 diamonds. It was an engagement gift from Prince Frederik, the future King Frederik VIII, to Lovisa on July 15, 1868. The couple married the following year. Lovisa, who was born a princess in Sweden, served as Queen of Denmark from 1906 until Frederik VIII’s death in 1912.

The portrait unveiled at the event, painted by Copenhagen-born artist Cathrine Raben Davidsen, now hangs in the Hall of Honor at Frederiksborg Castle alongside portraits of every Danish monarch of the Glücksborg royal family from Christian IX, who ruled from 1863 until his death in 1906, to the present day. As described by the Danish Royal House, “the traditional regent portrait meets Cathrine Raben Davidsen’s modern artistic language, where visible brushstrokes and transparent layers allow figure and nature to flow together.”
