Persuasion, A Queer Modern Farce by Lisa Quoresimo will get a one-day-only industry reading in NYC October 23.
The work is adapted from Jane Austen‘s final novel, which centers on a woman who reunites with the love of her life 18 years after being persuaded to give him up. Quoresimo’s play updates the action to modern day, centering on a family of “fading television royalty,” per press notes.
The cast for the reading will be led by Jessica Phillips and Jenn Colella, and will also feature Alma Cuervo, Susan Lynskey, Jimin Moon, Tom Nelis, Salma Qarnain, and Levin Valayil. Mindy Cooper is directing.
“In a world full of modern Austen adaptations, we are missing one for the older, wiser lovers,” say Quoresimo and Cooper in a joint statement. “We are excited to bring to life this comic tale of queer joy, and of love that comes when it is least expected.”
