Long-awaited drainage upgrades are set to begin on Staten Island’s Doty Avenue, a South Beach block with years of flooding. The Department of Environmental Protection will install 8 new catch basins and about 500 feet of 12-inch drain pipe. A spokesperson said the system will connect to an existing catch basin at the southwest corner of Doty, linked to a storm sewer beneath Father Capodanno Boulevard. Borough President Vito Fossella said the project has been a priority since 2022, and the work is approved. Residents have dealt with basement flooding, dirty conditions, and damaged furniture after heavy rain and nor’easters. Crews were dispatched to pump out water after the latest flooding, and Doty Avenue sits in a low-lying section of Staten Island.
