Construction has begun on the BIG-designed 175 Third Street scheme in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood. As we reported last year, the scheme is being developed in collaboration with dencityworks | architecture and will contain 1,000 residential units.

The 27-story tower will occupy more than one million square feet and feature a 28,000-square-foot public park along the Gowanus Canal, designed by landscape architects Field Operations. The building’s form consists of stacked concrete volumes that cascade toward the canal, creating a U-shaped silhouette oriented to maximize light, air, and outdoor space. An internal courtyard and rooftop terraces, designed by BIG Landscape, provide additional open areas.

“We are excited to break ground on an entire city block on the Gowanus Canal with Charney Companies and Tavros,” said Bjarke Ingels. ‘We have conceived the new neighborhood within 175 Third Street as a three – dimensional community of stacked and interlocking building blocks.”

“The architectural result appears like stacks of shifted blocks of rocks, chiseled and chamfered to allow life to enter into the cracks and corners, terraced ledges, and green roof gardens,” Ingels added. “The block opens to the canal, allowing the lush vegetation of the cascading courtyard to flow into the public waterfront, blurring the boundary between building and landscape.”
