NEW YORK (TNND) — An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed Friday afternoon during an attempted robbery in the Norwood section of the Bronx, prompting a major police response and the cancellation of a scheduled NYPD news conference on crime statistics.

Police said the attack happened around 1:40 to 1:45 p.m. near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue. Investigators said two suspects approached the detective on e-bikes before the stabbing.

The detective was stabbed or slashed multiple times in the neck and leg, according to law enforcement sources cited by the New York Post. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and was in stable condition, according to the NYPD and sources cited by the Post.

Police said the suspects fled the scene on e-bikes. No arrests were immediately announced, and it was not immediately clear whether anything was stolen.

The detective is assigned to the NYPD’s 44th Precinct and joined the department in July 2016.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited, or were en route to visit, the detective at the hospital. The NYPD also canceled a scheduled news conference on crime statistics after the stabbing.
