WASHINGTON (TNND) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that he believes that the U.S. should join the International Criminal Court and enforce the arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I believe that the US government should join the ICC,” Mamdani said during an interview with podcast host Theo Von which aired on Thursday. “It should enforce its warrants for everyone.”
Last year when Mamdani was running for mayor, he threatened to arrest Netanyahu if he ever came to New York City.
However, this year he admitted that his administration does not have the legal authority to arrest Netanyahu.
During the podcast interview with Von, Mamdani referred to Netanyahu as the “architect of a horrific genocide.”
Netanyahu went to New York last month to address the United Nations General Assembly. While he was speaking, several leaders walked out.
The ICC issued a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest for alleged war crimes, including “starvation as a method of warfare” and “other inhumane acts” against the Gazan population.
Netanyahu’s office in response called the ICC a “kangaroo court.”
“Its bogus arrest warrant against Prime Minister Netanyahu was issued by a disgraced former ICC Prosecutor, Karim Khan, a few days before allegations of sexual misconduct against him became public,” the office’s statement reads. “It was a clear attempt by Khan to divert public attention and seek protection from scrutiny.”
