NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An off-duty NYPD detective was critically injured in a stabbing in the Bronx on Friday, in what preliminary information indicates was an attempted robbery, according to police and Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The off-duty cop was stabbed multiple times—including twice in the back and once in each arm—on Rochambeau Avenue, near East 206th Street, in the Norwood section, sources told 1010 WINS. A 911 call came in shortly before 2 p.m.
An eyewitness said the bloodied officer was running through the street chasing after someone before he collapsed to the ground.
“The guy stabbed him, he chased the guy, and then he reached down Rochambeau by 206, and that’s where he collapsed in front of the building where I was sitting at,” said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “We know him from the neighborhood, so we know he’s a cop.”
Dozens of detectives, a police aircraft and K-9 units were in the area Friday afternoon as police searched for the stabber, who remained at large. According to police, the incident began when two men tried to rob the victim.
The mayor said he visited the injured detective and his family at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi alongside Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
“He is thankfully in stable condition, and I am hoping for his quick and complete recovery,” Mamdani wrote on social media. “I am confident that the NYPD will identify and apprehend the suspects and that the people responsible will be held to account.”
