ALLERTON, Bronx (WABC) — A 23-year-old woman has died and an infant remains in critical condition after both were found severely injured outside a Bronx apartment building early Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded around 3:38 a.m. to a building on Olinville Avenue in the Allerton section of the Bronx, where they discovered the woman and child outside. The infant, believed to be about 1 year old, was rushed to Jacobi Hospital in a police vehicle and remains in critical condition. The woman was also taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Investigators are working to determine exactly what happened. Police are seeking to speak with someone described as a white male in his 50s with gray hair.

One witness told police the woman and child were thrown from a balcony in the building. Authorities have not confirmed that account and are reviewing surveillance video while searching for additional witnesses.

The investigation remains ongoing.
