America may be home to thousands of independent coffee shops, but when it comes to the chains people search for most, the map quickly turns into a battle between a couple of national giants.
According to a new report from Innerbody Research, which compared Google searches for 15 major coffee chains to identify the most-searched brand in each state, Starbucks is a fan fave across 21 states, stretching from Washington and Colorado to Florida, Texas, Virginia, and the Carolinas.
But it doesn’t own the whole map. In fact, Innerbody’s data finds that Dunkin’ rules the Northeast.
“No brand has a cleaner regional stronghold than Dunkin’,” the report notes. “It wins 10 states — Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont — forming a tight Northeast and Mid-Atlantic stronghold.”
Originally founded in 1948 as Open Kettle in Quincy, Massachusetts, the brand was renamed Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950. The brand has always sold coffee alongside its donuts, but the beverage eventually became important enough to justify dropping “Donuts” from the company name in 2019.
Today, there are more than 12,000 Dunkin’ restaurants in 45 countries, including more than 1,400 in New York — the highest number of any state in the U.S. According to several data sites, Starbucks has half that amount, 740 cafes throughout the Empire State.
“We have continued to innovate our menu offerings with a robust beverage lineup, including Rainforest Alliance Certified Dark Roast coffee, Cold Brew, Macchiato and Premium Hot Teas,” Dunkin’ notes on its website.
