The two men allegedly responsible for brutally stabbing an off-duty NYPD detective in the Bronx last week were arrested overnight after they had fled the state, sources told amNewYork.
According to the NYPD, 25-year-old D’Angelo Caraballo and 24-year-old Sneider Mejia were tracked down in Lynn, MA, and were taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force just before 1 a.m. on Oct. 7, sources said. They had been hiding in the basement of a house when they were cuffed.
The arrests come just one day after Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch publicly identified the pair at an unrelated press conference.
The pair had been sought since Oct. 2 when they allegedly rode up to Detective Jose Mercedes of the 44th Precinct and stabbed him some seven times before making off with a chain he had around his neck.
He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and was able to stand up from his wheelchair and walk out of the medical facility on Monday evening.

“In another incredible feat of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes got up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet,” Commissioner Tisch said in a statement. “Hundreds of members of the NYPD were there to cheer their brother on. The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the greatest detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime.”
NYPD Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro expressed gratitude for the suspects’ arrests and demanded that they be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“We’re grateful to our partner agencies for their assistance. Now this union demands that the justice system hold these individuals fully accountable,” Munro said in a statement posted on X. “Our fellow detective and every New Yorker deserve nothing less.”
On Tuesday, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed the two suspects were undocumented immigrants and are wanted by the agency.
