ALLERTON, Bronx (WABC) — A 23-year-old woman died and her 8-month-old daughter remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday after both fell from a 15th-floor balcony at a Bronx apartment building, according to police.

The woman’s death is being investigated as a homicide, police said. Investigators are looking to speak with her ex-boyfriend as they work to determine what happened at the Allerville Arms apartment building on Olinville Avenue in the Allerton section of the Bronx.

Officers responded to the building around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and found the woman, identified as Nathaly Ramirez, and her infant daughter outside. Police rushed the child to Jacobi Hospital in a patrol vehicle. Ramirez was also taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the baby survived the fall and remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition Wednesday. Police believe Ramirez fell in a way that cushioned the impact for her daughter.

Anthony Carlo spoke to neighbors and friends of the young mother who died.

Friends and neighbors gathered outside the building with flowers and candles to remember Ramirez, describing her as a devoted new mother.

“She was very happy like she was very happy to be a mom. She’s a new mom and the baby was very happy,” one friend said.

Investigators spent hours examining a 15th-floor balcony, searching for evidence and reviewing surveillance video. A witness told Eyewitness News she heard a woman yelling, “please don’t do this!” before seeing something fall to the ground.

Sources told Eyewitness News there was a documented history of domestic violence at the apartment. Neighbors said they witnessed a disturbance involving a man at the residence earlier this year.

“It happened in January. He was kicking the door down trying to get into the apartment. I’m not even sure what else can be done but something that will shine a light on the drastic uptick in domestic violence situations especially for you know women out here, YOUNG women like her,” neighbor Mike said.

No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
