Two men accused of stabbing and robbing an off-duty NYPD detective in the Bronx last week were arrested overnight in Massachusetts, police said.

The suspects, identified by police as D’Angelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia, were taken into custody in Lynn, Massachusetts, by NYPD detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the Boston Regional Fugitive Task Force. Investigators said the men were hiding in the basement of a home when they were arrested.

Police said the arrests are connected to the attempted murder of off-duty Detective Jose Mercedes, who was stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx on Oct. 2.

Investigators said Mercedes, 33, was near his vehicle at Rochambeau Avenue and East 208th Street in the Norwood section when two men riding a motorized bike approached him, stabbed and slashed him multiple times, and stole a gold chain from his neck before fleeing.

Despite his injuries, Mercedes pursued the suspects on foot before collapsing several blocks away, according to investigators. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and was listed in stable condition.

The attack prompted a large-scale manhunt, and the NYPD later released surveillance video of the suspects as detectives worked to identify them.

In announcing the arrests, police thanked the U.S. Marshals Service for its assistance in the investigation.

In a statement following the arrests, Scott Munro, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, praised investigators and called for the suspects to be held accountable, saying there was “nowhere to run and nowhere to hide” for those accused of attacking an NYPD detective.

“This union demands that the justice system hold these individuals fully accountable. Our fellow detective and every New Yorker deserve nothing less,” Munro said.
