The founder of a wellness center in the Bronx is now facing murder charges after a woman died this summer following a serum injection.
Dr. Luis Rojas, who advertises himself as a holistic doctor who offers alternative medicine, had already been charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession in the July death of 27-year-old Elizabeth Baron. Charges were upgraded this week to include murder with “depraved indifference.”
Law enforcement sources have said Baron was receiving an injection of some sort of serum as part of an anti-aging treatment when something went wrong. The woman lost consciousness and was taken to the emergency room, but she could not be saved.
Rojas worked out of Bereshit Lifestyle Center along Riverdale Avenue. His website offers a host of services, but it neglects to mention that Rojas does not have a license to practice medicine in the U.S.. He had a license to practice medicine in the Dominican Republic but not in the U.S., according to police. His website indicates he is certified as a medical assistant in alternative medicine.
His bail has been set at $2 million. Attorney information for Rojas was not known.
At the time of her death, it wasn’t clear if Baron had any underlying medical conditions.
